Heidelberg has a long and interesting history. Since its founding in 1850, it has had a long evolution to become one of the most recognised printing press names in the world. Here are some key points in the company’s journey from machine factory, to global supplier:
1912: The ‘propeller gripper’ launched which allowed sheets to automatically feed, rather than be placed by hand. A big technical advancement as well as a welcomed operational time saver
1934: Heidelberg launched an automatic, high-speed cylinder press
1957: The biggest printing press plant in the world was opened in Wiesloch, close to Heidelberg
1959: Production reached 100,000 presses made by the company
1962: Production of off-set printing presses began at the site
1985: A second, fully computerised plant opened in Amstetten
1997: After various acquisitions in the 1980s and 1990s including Harris, Linotype-Hell, Stork Contiweb and Sheridan Systems the group was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange
2000: The Print Media Academy opened, with Heidelberg celebrating 150 years in business
Today: According to the Heidelberg website, the company has more than a 40% market share for sheet fed, off-set presses. Including sales partners, there are now about 11,500 employees across 250 production sites in 170 countries around the world.
